Jay Williams is a former Duke Blue Devil and college basketball legend who went on to stardom as an NBA commentator in recent years.
Williams was chosen second overall behind Chinese big man Yao Ming in the 2002 NBA draft before playing 75 games with the Chicago Bulls in 2002-2003, his only NBA season during a career cut short by injuries.
On Thursday, Williams began speaking about Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick, who faced criticisms following the Lakers' Game 5 playoff elimination loss at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Redick was staunchly defended by his Duke Blue Devils contemporary in comments that caused a backlash on X Thursday.

Williams defended Redick over assertions that he stormed out of a press conference and acted in a childish way during a recent media session.
"JJ Redick didn't storm out," Williams said. "He exposed the echo chamber show. The problem isn't his temper — it's a media culture that confuses 'gotcha' questions with journalism.
"Y'all begged for new voices in coaching... now you're mad they're not playing the old PR game."
Fans lashed out in the comments section as they accused Williams of being biased in favor of a former Blue Devils great.
"How is this a 'gotcha' question?" New York Knicks and NBA reporter Ian Begley asked.
"How is this a gotcha? He literally did something not done since the 80s. No subs in the 2nd half," another fan said.
"That's not a gotcha question. Even Reggie Miller said he was being childish," another fan added.
Another fan called out Williams in a sarcastic way to which Williams fired back.

I honestly think that’s a lazy assessment. I have been critical of JJ so many times. https://t.co/2WMeC65wFa
