Los Angeles Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt sustained a full dislocation of his right pinky finger in Game 1 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Vanderbilt ended up needing stitches because the bone of his finger broke through his skin, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The injury was bad enough that the Thunder bench saw the state of his finger and reacted in disgust.
The injury happened in the second quarter, and he did not return to the game. The Lakers lost 108-90 on the road in the series opener.

Vanderbilt is an ideal player to throw at Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is so crafty and loves to operate on the ball. The forward tends to specialize in guarding smaller players due to his mobility, and he could have been another player to throw at the reigning MVP.
Instead, the Lakers will likely miss Vanderbilt for some time unless it heals well quickly.
Vanderbilt finished with two points and a rebound in six minutes. This season, he’s averaged 4.4 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.
The Lakers are already short-handed with Luka Doncic out for at least the first handful of games, and now, their depth gets shallower by one player.
Los Angeles will hope to steal an early road game on Thursday against the Thunder to even up the series. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. PT.
