It's common knowledge that questions have surrounded Jalen Carter throughout portions of the offseason. There were discussions about his health and whether his 2025 Philadelphia Eagles campaign represented a slight step backward.

Most wanted to assume the dominant start to his career was more indicative of who he is and that injuries played a part in his stagnation. Others questioned whether ongoing contract negotiations could become a distraction once training camp arrived.

Those conversations have disappeared. The Eagles rewarded Carter with a record-breaking extension that made him the NFL's highest-paid defensive tackle. Since putting pen to paper, the All-Pro has looked every bit like the disruptive force the organization expected him to be.

Jalen Carter has returned to being a dominant presence

So far, so good on the investment. Early signs and reports stemming from training camp offer a warning for the NFL. A renewed focus and energy have brought back the version of Carter opposing offenses hate to see.

He's been consistently disruptive, collapsing the pocket, batting down passes at the line of scrimmage and creating problems that don't always appear in the box score. During one early practice, Carter and Jalyx Hunt helped set the tone for a defensive performance that made life difficult for Jalen Hurts and the Eagles' first-team offense.

Another session featured Carter knocking down a pass at the line of scrimmage before continuing to generate pressure throughout practice. A noticeable edge has matched the production.

Carter has carried himself with the same feistiness and competitive fire that helped establish him as one of the league's premier interior defenders. There has been no sense of complacency following the richest contract ever given to a defensive tackle. If anything, the extension appears to have removed the only lingering offseason distraction, allowing him to focus entirely on football.

Training camp doesn't guarantee regular-season success, and dominant August performances don't automatically translate into dominant Sundays. But through the opening stretch of camp, Carter has looked locked in, motivated and determined to justify every dollar of his record-setting contract.

That's encouraging news for the Eagles. It's potentially unsettling news for the rest of the NFL. If this version of Jalen Carter carries into the regular season, Philadelphia's defense may once again be built around one of football's most disruptive interior forces.
