Italy claimed their third speed skating gold at the Milan/Cortina Winter Olympics with a win in the men's team pursuit on Tuesday, while Canada claimed back-to-back golds in the women's event.
Davide Ghiotto, Andrea Giovannini and Michele Malfatti clocked 3 minutes 39.20 seconds to beat top favourites United States by 4.51 seconds.
Italy trailed at halfway but made up for it in the second half of the race to defeat the reigning world champions.
Italian speed skater Francesca Lollobrigida was at the arena to cheer on the Italian team after winning the two other golds for her nation.
Bronze went to China, who beat the Netherlands in the Final B.
In the women's pursuit, the trio of Ivanie Blondin, Valérie Maltais and Isabelle Weidemann repeated Canada's 2022 title by beating the Netherlands by mere 0.96 seconds.
The US finished this event empty-handed after losing the bronze medal race to Japan.
Both Japan and the Netherlands were on the podium for a third consecutive Olympics.
In the team pursuits, two teams of three skaters race starting on opposite sides. The clock stops when the last skater crosses the line.
The men's and women's mass starts are on Saturday.
