One of the most iconic coach-fighter tandems in UFC middleweight history is no longer together.

Former middleweight king Israel Adesanya announced Thursday a split from longtime coach Eugene Bareman and team City Kickboxing. He did so via his YouTube channel. The decision was made and relayed weeks ago behind closed doors.

"Wednesday, the 20th of May, I spoke to Eugene face-to-face, and I told him I'm not coming back to CKB," Adesanya said. "This was something a long time coming behind the scenes. We have an understanding. I won't lie. It sucks. Not anymore. Eh, grief comes in waves for me, and most people who have grieved before. This comes in waves. I've had great days, but I've also had these days where I'm like, 'F*ck.' Like I said, it's a long time coming. I just want to get it out the way. I want you to hear it from the horse's mouth because no one else has spoken about it, and those who know are waiting for the ball to drop, so I drop the ball. It's bittersweet, but it's the right thing for me, especially where I'm at in my career. It's exactly what I needed. Insanity is doing the same sh*t and expecting a different result. I think that's it."

The move for Adesanya (24-6 MMA, 13-6 UFC) comes as he sits on the longest skid of his competitive career. He's lost four fights in a row and has been finished in all of them. He most recently lost by second-round TKO to Joe Pyfer in March.

Adesanya, 36, had been an official part of City Kickboxing since 2010. With Bareman in his corner, he reached the highest levels of the sport, winning the title and defending it six times before a loss to Alex Pereira – only to win it back in an immediate rematch.

It seems Adesanya has not lost the importance of those memories, as he thanked many in the City Kickboxing team one by one.

Adesanya indicated that a change in recipe is what he needs, but declined to elaborate further on the specifics of why he felt the old recipe was not working. He also did not say if there is already a plan in place to join a specific new team.

"I just don't want to talk about it," Adesanya said. "It's something that sucks. I want to grieve in peace. If people want to bring it up, that's cool. But don't ask me about it. I don't do interviews anyway, so nobody is going to ask me sh*t. 2009 is when I first went to CKB. 2010 is when I first moved over, and I established myself to train at CKB. CKB made me into the fighter that I am today. They've trained a lot of great fighters – greats even better than myself. But me as an individual, CKB made me into the fighter I am today. But also, I was one of the main pillars who put CKB on the map on the world stage, to take it to the next level where people all over the world want to come train at CKB. I'm proud of that. ... What I need for myself is focused, individual training. So I've made the decision to leave CKB for my own reasons. I'll leave it at that."
