Looks like Beef Stew is going to be served outside of Detroit. The Pistons pulled off an NBA Draft Day 2 trade to send forward Isaiah Stewart to the Memphis Grizzlies, who suddenly look like a pretty intriguing team on paper.
Stewart brought his toughness and defense to the Pistons ever since he was the 16th overall pick out of Washington in 2020, and since then, he's emerged as a solid bench player who also happens to get into some physical battles from time to time. It's a good addition to a Grizzlies team that's taking shape with a young, talented core. And as for the Pistons? It'll be interesting to see where they're going from here as they contend.
Who won this deal? What are the details? Let's break it all down for you:
Grizzlies get: F/C Isaiah Stewart
Pistons get: Three future second-round picks
I love what the Grizzlies are doing in the draft and in the offseason. And while maybe we're all waiting for a Ja Morant trade, this one adds some grit to a young core that includes Zach Edey, Cedric Coward and Cameron Boozer. Stewart will be a solid backup and a vet who can bring leadership.
For three future second-rounders? Not a bad price to pay at all. GRADE: B+
We all know thanks to all the trade rumors that the Pistons are looking at shooters left and right. But with Stewart due $15 million next season and a $15 million team option in 2027-28, his contract will come off the books and give the Pistons some flexibility. Perhaps this grade should be incomplete until we see what they can do with that money, but I like this simple move a lot anyway. GRADE: B+
