Ten years ago, the Miami Heat received a surprise when LeBron James decided to take his talents from the Cleveland Cavaliers to Biscayne Boulevard.
This time around, the Heat weren't so lucky. On Friday, James announced he was leaving the Los Angeles Lakers to play for the Philadelphia 76ers. The move gives the Sixers a lineup of James, Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid and Jaylen Brown, who are all All-Star caliber players.
This means the Heat have to do some tinkering with their lineup if they want to have any chance of competing with the Sixers and the defending champion New York Knicks. With James out of the picture, who can the Heat turn toward? And who can they afford?
Most reports are leaning toward the Heat making a push for future Hall of Famer DeMar DeRozan, who played for the Sacramento Kings last season. The Heat are no strangers to courting DeRozan. He's been on their for the past several years, dating before they traded for Jimmy Butler in the summer of 2019.
While DeRozan is still capable of being a volume scorer (he averaged 18.2 points last year), there are concerns about his age. At 36, he is already on the back end of his playing days.
The positive is the Heat have two other stars who could serve as the No. 1 and No. 2 scoring options in Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Adebayo is still in the prime of his career while Antetokounmpo, 31, is a two-time MVP and one-time champion who remains a dominant force on both ends.
Even at his, DeRozan could be a solid complement to the Heat's dominant frontcourt. While it is less of a splash than adding James, this is likely their best option at this point in free agency.
The bottom line is the Heat need a little bit more to be in the mix in the East
