The Baltimore Ravens have hired the fourth head coach in franchise history, as owner Steve Bisciotti named Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter as the guy to replace John Harbaugh.

Minter was on the Ravens' coaching staff from 2017-20, beginning as a defensive assistant, then promoted to assistant defensive backs coach and, in 2020, to defensive backs coach. He was scheduled to interview for the Browns head coaching job on Thursday, but Mary Kay Cabot reported that Minter canceled that interview, narrowing his choices down.

Now we know, Minter had word that the Ravens coach job was his after Joe Brady and Anthony Weaver were named finalists.

With the news now official, we're looking at an instant analysis of the huge decision.

Minter has prepared for this moment

Minter succeeded current Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald as Michigan's defensive coordinator when Macdonald joined the Ravens in 2022. After winning a national title in 2023, Minter followed Jim Harbaugh to the Chargers, and his defenses have earned respect around the league as Los Angeles is tied for second in interceptions (15) and tied for eighth in takeaways (18).

Minter's reaction

"I am truly honored to serve as the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens," Minter stated. "This is an organization whose values, culture and tradition of excellence reflect everything I believe about the game of football and how it should be played."

Minter had options

Minter was a favorite of the Ravens, and earned a second interview with the Las Vegas Raiders, and was scheduled to interview with the Cleveland Browns before cancelling.

Minter is family

Minter worked for both Harbaugh brothers, so he understands the culture and the Ravens won't venture far off from the physical, and intimidating style of play. He'll now work to get the Ravens to a Super Bowl.
