Insider Reveals Warriors Passed On Trading For Jaylen Brown

Did the Golden State Warriors make a big mistake back at the trade deadline? According to insider Shams Charania, they had a chance to trade for Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics back in February, but passed on it.

The Warriors had an opportunity to acquire Jaylen Brown from the Celtics at February’s trade deadline, but they declined, per @ShamsCharania.

Charania told Stephen A. Smith that it would have taken all of the Warriors’ future draft capital to pull it off.

The Warriors could’ve got in the Jaylen Brown sweepstakes if they wanted to give up four first-round picks-ish, in that range. They decided not to from my understanding. Those two teams, the Warriors and Celtics did talk about a Jaylen Brown trade around the trade deadline, and it was around several first-round draft picks, potential swaps, and seconds.

The Warriors decided not to go down that route, and so that’s on them. That’s the decision they made.

If Warriors had landed either Jaylen Brown or Anthony Davis, LeBron could have been theirs​

Charania went on to add that had the Dubs pulled that off, they, and not the Philadelphia 76ers, could have been the winners of the LeBron James sweepstakes this summer. Same goes for a hypothetical acquisition of James’ former title-winning teammate in LA, Anthony Davis.

If they had went out and got (the Jaylen Brown trade) done, does that make LeBron James more viable? What if the Warriors had gone out and been willing to give up several draft capital to go get an Anthony Davis from Washington, does LeBron James follow suit? My understanding was, if the Warriors were able to get Anthony Davis, they had as good of a chance, if not better than anyone, to get a LeBron James and I think you have to look at that in the calculus of everything.

In the end, both Brown and James are now alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey in Philly. They are now in the conversation to be a top threat to knock off the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference.

The Warriors, meanwhile, are dealing with an unhappy Steph Curry. They’re stuck with their current roster (which finished 37-45 last season). Golden State is unlikely now to be able to lure another All-Star to the Bay Area. Draymond Green is expected to re-up on a free agent deal at about $28 million, leaving no space left over to reel in another big fish. Jimmy Butler isn’t expected back from his torn right ACL until about halfway through the upcoming season.
