Mason Marchment is part of one of the most dangerous lines in hockey over the past two seasons, and Wednesday's Game 3 performance sums up exactly what kind of player he is - sometimes frustrating but always entertaining and certainly an integral part of the Dallas Stars.

Marchment set up the game winning goal in overtime by expertly gaining the inside body positioning on Avs defenseman Devon Towers, shielding him from the puck as he found Tyler Seguin driving the net.

It was only fitting that he would atone for his earlier transgression that nearly cost Dallas the win - a four minute double minor penalty taken with under a minute to go in regulation with the score tied. The Stars hung on to send it to overtime and squeaked through the rest of the penalty kill thanks in part to Esa Lindell blocking a wide open net and saving what could have been the easiest goal Arturri Lehkonen had ever scored.

The give and take is all part of Marchment's game, which had included a tripping minor earlier in the game. It also included four more penalty minutes in the first two games, but it was coupled with two Avalanche penalties that he drew.

He might take some frustrating penalties, but he is always in the thick of the action, willing to put his body on the line. He is one of the most important physical players on the team, which is even more important come playoff time.

His father, the late Bryan Marchment, was as hard-nosed a defenseman as they came, injuring former Stars Mike Modano and Joe Nieuwendyk from heavy hits that he doled out. In some ways, Marchment is like his dad, never afraid to stir the pot or shy away from anyone. But in other ways, he is completely different, adding skill and goal scoring that was never part of his dad's game.

Throughout his tenure with Dallas, Marchment has always filled up the stat sheet, whether it's points or penalties, and the game is never dull when he is on the ice.

If Colorado had scored while he was in the box, there might be a whole different story. But the team had his back enough to allow that mistake to come and go and not define the outcome of the game. With the bad comes the good, and Dallas is up 2-1 in their first round series because of it.
