Illan Meslier is set to join Arsenal as a free agent after leaving Leeds United, according to The Athletic. The Emirates Stadium club are looking to strengthen in the position and the 26-year-old fits the profile Gunners manager Mikel Arteta wants at North London. Meslier’s arrival at Arsenal is pending a club medical, and he will hope to provide quality cover and competition for David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga. Meslier moved to Leeds on an initial loan from Lorient in the summer 2019, helping the Elland Road club win promotion to the Premier League from the Championship at the end of his debut season.
He was first-choice in the three seasons they spent in the top-flight under Marcelo Bielsa and brings plenty of experience to the table.
Meslier remained in goal for the 2023-24 campaign but lost his place in 2024-25 under current Whites head coach Daniel Farke due to a poor form.
The Frenchman could be Arsenal’s first signing of the summer transfer window.
His signing should see England under-21 goalkeeper Tommy Setford to leave the Gunners on loan, and he could do with much-needed experience at senior level.
The 20-year-old has made only two senior appearances for Arsenal, and the club want him to continue his development elsewhere.
Kepa could also look to move on this summer having largely played second fiddle to Raya since joining from Chelsea last summer.
