Iowa girls high school sports will remain on PBS.
On Thursday, Jan. 29, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and PBS announced a new multiyear agreement that will keep coverage of several high school girls state championships on Iowa PBS through 2031. There is also an option to extend the joint coverage through 2035, according to a press release.
The new agreement keeps girls state championship finals for volleyball, basketball and softball on Iowa PBS. It also adds coverage of the girls state wrestling tournament finals, marking the sport's first-ever statewide TV coverage in Iowa.
The partnership between IGHSAU and Iowa PBS will keep events free and accessible to everybody across the state, according to a press release. IGHSAU championship events will also be available on Iowa PBS digital platforms, expanding viewing options for audiences.
“For generations, Iowa PBS has played a vital role in bringing championship moments into homes across the state,” Iowa PBS Executive Director and General Manager Andrew Batt said in the release. “Extending our partnership with the IGHSAU ensures Iowa student-athletes can compete for a state championship in front of a statewide audience.”
The girls state wrestling championships, which will be held Feb. 5-6 in Coralville, will be the first event covered under this new agreement.
“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Iowa PBS,” IGHSAU Executive Director Erin Gerlich said in a release. "Iowa PBS has been a tremendous partner in elevating the Iowa Girl through its high-quality coverage, and we are excited to see that commitment extend to the Iowa Girls State Wrestling Championships.”
