Iga Swiatek has battled into the second round of the Australian Open after overcoming qualifier Yue Yuan.

Yuan certainly posed a threat to Swiatek at times, but ultimately world number two Swiatek prevailed 7-6(7-5), 6-3.

The Pole is currently chasing the career Grand Slam at the Australian Open, having already won the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.

She is a six-time Grand Slam champion at the age of 24, and has twice reached the semifinals in Melbourne but no further.

Iga Swiatek hits back at Taylor Swift critics

Swiatek now turns her focus to Marie Bouzkova, but after her latest win she was tasked with discussing another superstar.

Along with questions about her tournament, it was put to the Pole in her press conference: “A Taylor Swift question. When the album Life of a Showgirl came out in the fall, you really, really liked it. There was some criticism of it in the weeks following. Did the album hold up for you?”

She replied: “Yeah, I like it. Honestly, people are going to criticize everything, so… I think it was great.

“I mean, it’s kind of short. It’s not like you’re going to find some surprising things on it after you listened to it a couple of times.

“The songs are catchy. That’s what she wanted. That’s what she said from the beginning. She achieved the goal she wanted.

“Every song is a hit on this album. But yeah, I guess you can find different stuff in art and music.

“If some people have different expectations and they look at an album like that, they will always find something to criticize. Yeah, I like it.”

Iga Swiatek shares love for Taylor Swift song Elizabeth Taylor

Swiatek is a huge fan of music superstar Swift, and is among the countless fans worldwide to have watched her live.

The WTA ace even received merchandise and a handwritten letter from her American idol related to the album The Life of a Showgirl.

Choosing her favorite song, Swiatek said in Melbourne: “Honestly, it’s hard to pick because she keeps the level high.

“The whole album is kind of consistent. I like Elizabeth Taylor, but I wouldn’t say it’s much higher in my rank than others in terms of the likability.”

She will no doubt be listening to the global star during her time in Australia, but of course only away from the court.

On the court, it promises to be a very tricky route to a maiden title, with Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Amanda Anisimova and Elena Rybakina among her potential opponents along the way.
