Worthley slides into 3rd against Wichita | Nebraska Athletics

In front of a vocal group of Husker fans, probably on their way to cheer on the basketball team another 2 hours to the south in OKC, the baseball team sent them packing with as much good mojo (shout-out Mojo Hagge!) as they could. After a 8-1 win on Tuesday, Bolt and Co. swept the 2 game mini-series with a 10-1 victory.

Nebraska wasted little time getting the scoring started. They took advantage of the struggles of Lincoln native Reese Cortum on the mound. Mac Moyer worked a long at bat into a walk, and then Jeter Worthley absorbed a fastball on the arm. Back to back RBI singles from Case Sanderson and Jett “Mount” Buck gave Nebraska a 2-0 lead before they recorded an out.

Dylan Carey hit a ball up the middle that the third baseman threw wild to 2nd. They were seemingly able to tag Buck out on the fielders choice, despite inconclusive reviews, but Carey added another RBI. After loading the bases with Drew Grego reaching on a catcher’s interference, and Josh Overbeek working a walk, Trey Fikes picked up the black and blue RBI, being hit by a pitch. Huskers lead 4-0 after a 29 minute opening half inning.

in the second inning, Jeter Worthley led the inning off with a solid single to center. One of his team leading 3 hits on the day. Moving him back up into the #2 slot in the lineup really paid off for the Huskers. Worthley stole second base, and with two outs scampered home on a hard hit ball by Carey. Carey had 2 RBIs on the game, and NU had a 5-0 lead after 2.

Worthley found himself leading off the 4th inning as well, and mashed a double to left center. Sanderson hit a sharp line drive to center, but with Jeter’s speed, he was able to move to third base on the play. A wild pitch bounced around on the Wichita State turf, and knowing catcher Ethan Rodriguez had struggled all day finding the ball, Worthley took off for home, and beat the throw just in time to take a 6-0 lead.

Nebraska starting pitcher Pryce Bender had a bounce back performance after a rough relief appearance in the Maine series finale on Saturday night in which he allowed 2 inherited runners to score and allowed 4 of his own without recording an out. Today his lone blemish came in the 4th inning as he walked a batter with 2 outs, and then gave up an RBI triple. On the day he gave up 3 hits and a run in 4 innings, and struck out 3.

While that pitching performance was good, the Husker bullpen was great. They pitched a perfect 5 innings, giving up no hits, walks or runs and striking out 9 of the 15 batters they faced.

Tucker Timmerman picked up the win, going 2 innings with 2 strikeouts. Then Chase Olson struck out the side in the 7th inning. Jace Ziola struck out 2 in his 8th inning. And Grant Clevenger struck out the first 2 batters in the 9th before Ryan Harrahill came in to record the final out.

The Huskers just narrowly missed run ruling the Shockers, as in the 7th, Freshman Drew Grego hit the first home run of his Nebraska career. A 2 run bomb to center, scoring Carey.

They added the final 2 runs in the 8th, as a leadoff single slapped into shallow left by Mac Moyer got things started. Worthley then collected his second double of the day down the left field line. Moyer had an awkward turn around third, enough to prompt the trainer to come out and take a look at him, otherwise he would have scored on the play. But he and Worthley only had to wait one more batter, as Sanderson smacked a 2 RBI double. A 10-1 Big Red win.

This is the offense we had hoped to see against the hurlers of Maine. 27 hits in the 2 game series for 18 runs. Nebraska continues to have excellent lead off at bats in every inning, which you knew would eventually let the flood gates open. Leadoff batters were 5 for 9 at reaching base today, with the suddenly struggling Overbeek striking out twice in that situation. If this offense can get him and Max Buettenback, who had a solidly hit single today, back to form they will be a force.

After their short break, Nebraska is back into Big Ten play this weekend, taking their 11 game winning streak north to Michigan for a 3 game series, scheduled to start at 3pm CDT on Friday.
