The Carolina Hurricanes reached the 100-point mark once again with a 5-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on Tuesday night.
Columbus entered as the more desperate team, as they push for a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but Nikolaj Ehlers and the Carolina power play proved to be too much.
The Canes staked themselves to a 2-0 lead after the first period as the power play went two-for-two courtesy of goals from Shayne Gostisbehere and Logan Stankoven.
The first two tallies were set up by impressive primary assists from Ehlers and Mark Jankowski, respectively.
The Blue Jackets made their push in the second period, as Kirill Marchenko got one just past the goal line to cut his team’s deficit in half.
Columbus found an equalizer in the third period as Adam Fantilli hammered home an impressive one-timer from a challenging angle that beat Brandon Bussi high to make it a 2-2 game.
The Canes re-engaged from there, taking control of the flow of play once again, and they paid it off when Ehlers danced with the puck for a while at the point before sending a wrister that Jet Greaves never saw into the upper half of the net.
An ambitious challenge for goalie interference on the part of Jackets coach Rick Bowness was unsuccessful, giving Carolina a power play with about seven minutes left. That allowed the Hurricanes to expand their lead, as Ehlers unleashed his second primary assist of the night with another no-look pass on the power play to Andrei Svechnikov, who blasted a one-timer home past Greaves.
A Jordan Martinook empty netter from deep in the Carolina zone put the exclamation point on an impressive road division win, and the Canes won’t have to wait long to get another look at one of their potential first-round opponents, as the Blue Jackets will visit the Lenovo Center on Thursday.
