Mackenzie Gore makes his ninth start of the 2025 MLB season for the Washington Nationals on Sunday. The left-hand pitcher is off to a fiery start, tossing a majors-best 68 strikeouts in 46 innings.

Gore, who was selected No. 3 overall by the San Diego Padres in the 2017 MLB draft, was a standout at Whiteville High School in Eastern North Carolina.

Since getting called up to the big leagues in 2022, Gore, who turned 26 earlier this year, has made 83 appearances with 80 starts, throwing 472 strikeouts with a career 4.11 ERA. This season, however, is the lefty's best start by far as he's on pace for nearly 300 strikeouts.

Washington Nationals vs St. Louis Cardinals: Mackenzie Gore to start

After six full days of rest, Gore will make the start on the mound for Washington Sunday afternoon, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com first reported.

The pitcher tweaked his ankle during a rainy win over Cincinnati on May 4, where he threw six Ks, allowing one hit before being pulled due to the injury.

What do the experts say about Mackenzie Gore?

Gore started 2025 fast, throwing 13 strikeouts while walking zero on opening day.

“That was special,” manager Davey Martinez told MLB.com's Jessica Camerato. “To go out there in his first Opening Day start and do what he did was awesome.”

Brent Maguire, MLB.com

"Gore has slowly built himself into one of the most exciting starters in the Majors. The 26-year-old Gore has a 3.33 ERA and 1.3 FanGraphs Wins Above Replacement in his first eight starts and has struck out an MLB-leading 68 hitters."

Paul Hembekides, ESPN

"At 26, Gore might have the best breaking-ball combination in all of baseball. Leads the majors with 68 strikeouts and 38 of which are on his breaking balls. He has a 52% whiff-rate using his curve ball and his slider. That's an astronomical number."
