The 2026 FIFA World Cup is bringing athletes, coaches and fans from 48 countries to the United States, Mexico and Canada.

For some, it’ll be the first time traveling to North America for the world’s most popular sporting event. But for Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande, it marks a return to a country he used to call home.

Diomande, born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, plays in the Bundesliga, Germany’s top soccer league, for RB Leipzig. The Ivorian spent his early years in his home country before moving to the shores of Daytona Beach at 15 years old to join DME Academy’s soccer team.

Diomande played for the Daytona Beach-based sports academy from 2022-24 before moving back overseas to play for then-La Liga side Leganés and eventually joining the top of the German ranks.

The 19-year-old youngster will now shift his focus toward his World Cup debut for Ivory Coast as part of its starting 11 on June 14 at 7 p.m.

Here’s everything you need to know before he and his home country take the pitch.

Where is Yan Diomande from?

Diomande hails from Abidjan, the most populous city of Ivory Coast, a Western African coastal nation located off the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean.

Abidjan’s 6.3 million residents make up more than a fifth of the country’s population and place it as the sixth-most populous city in all of Africa. It was the original capital of Ivory Coast in 1933 when it was a French colony before Yamoussoukro was designated the capital in 1983.

Still, Abidjan holds the majority of the country’s economic power. It’s also the birthplace of Ivorian soccer legend Didier Drogba, who is the top foreign goal-scorer for English Premier League powerhouse, Chelsea.

Yan Diomande’s professional career after DME Academy

After spending three years with DME Academy, as well as Yulee High School, Diomande left to play in Spain’s top league for Leganés, which has since been relegated to the Spanish second tier.

Diomande played 10 games for Leganés before RB Leipzig came calling, and it was the right call for the German soccer club. In 33 matches during the 2025-26 Bundesliga season, Diomande started 28 of them and scored 12 goals with eight assists.

Partly thanks to Diomande’s efforts, RB Leipzig finished third in the Bundesliga standings to earn it a spot in the UEFA Champions League, the prestigious European soccer tournament comprising top-division teams from across the continent.

Diomande may be on the move again, this time to the English Premier League, as rumors of a potential deal with Liverpool continue to heat up.

Yan Diomande international career

Diomande has made nine career appearances on Ivory Coast's senior international team, beginning in 2025.

He's scored three goals and was a starter in Ivory Coast's latest outing, a 2-1 victory over France, the world's No. 3-ranked squad, on June 4.

Ivory Coast World Cup Group

Ivory Coast will be competing in Group E in the FIFA World Cup alongside Germany, Ecuador and Curaçao. If Ivory Coast finishes in the top two of its group, it’ll move on from the group stage to the newly-added Round of 32 thanks to the expanded field.

Should Ivory Coast find itself outside of the top two, it still has an opportunity to advance if it’s one of the eight best third-place group stage finishers. That’ll be determined based on points earned, followed by goal differential, goals scored, team conduct score (amount of yellow and red cards) and FIFA rankings in that order.

Ivory Coast is the No. 33-ranked national team in the current FIFA rankings.
