Caitlin Clark has one heck of an act to follow after she scored a career-high 45 points in the Indiana Fever's 110-107 victory over the Seattle Storm on July 17.
The All-Star point guard won't have much time to celebrate as the Fever play host to the New York Liberty on Saturday, July 18 (8 p.m. ET, CBS).
The prime-time game will be preceded by CBS' final "WNBA Tip-Off Show," of the season. The pregame broadcast features host Jenny Dell, Renee Montgomery and Hall of Famer Lisa Leslie.
Leslie has relished working as an analyst, especially this season as the game continues to elevate. Clark is a great example, having reached 200 career 3-pointers in her 74th game on her way to Friday's points milestone. That's faster than any player in WNBA history. Clark is also the first player in league history with 40-plus points and 10 assists in a single game.
"I'm so proud of where the W is. I'm proud of the players and the product that is being put on the floor each and every night. And I'm also proud of the opportunities these women are getting. They're getting their flowers," Leslie told USA TODAY. "I just feel like a proud mom — or auntie, as they call me."
Saturday's game pits Clark and the Fever (15-10) against a Liberty team (13-11) looking to break a three-game losing streak. New York had a Thursday game postponed because of issues with its charter plane.
The matchup also comes amid a reinvigorated discussion regarding online racial abuse directed toward the league's players.
Leslie sat courtside as the Fever beat the Las Vegas Aces 109-75 on July 12. With 20 points for the Aces in the loss, four-time WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson passed Leslie for 14th on the WNBA's all-time scorers list.
"I always try to let these players know directly how proud I am of them, because there's a lot of pressure on them in a way that I think we didn't have," Leslie said. "I mean, yes, people talked about us getting back in the kitchen and they wrote it in the newspaper. But now, with social media, everyone has an opinion about the article and the words, in a way that can create so much vitriol."
CBS Sports has been broadcasting "We Need to Talk," the first-ever all-women national sports show, since 2014. As part of the WNBA's monumental 11-year, $3.1 billion media rights agreement that runs through 2036, this is the network's first year with its expanded programming surrounding the league. "We just hope to continue to build on it," Leslie said. "This is our first season covering the WNBA pregame and halftime consistently this way, so it feels great, but it also feels like we're just doing the job that we've always been doing."
