One of baseball's best traditions is on the horizon, with the 40th edition of the MLB Home Run Derby set to take place on Monday, July 13, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Some of the game's top offensive threats are set to mash, hoping to add their respective names to a stacked list of winners which features some of modern history's most feared sluggers. Since its debut in 1985, 35 different hitters have won the event, with Cincinnati Reds outfielder Dave Parker winning the first-ever derby crown.

Over the years, we've seen several stars win the derby multiple times, including Ken Griffey Jr. (the only player to ever win three), Pete Alonso, Yoenis Cespedes, and Prince Fielder (all of whom won the event twice). This year, Phillies superstar Bryce Harper aims to join the exclusive list of multi-Derby winners after last capturing the crown in 2018 with the Nationals.

What is the format of the 2026 MLB Home Run Derby?

This year's MLB Home Run Derby will look different than it has in past years. For over a decade, rounds have started and finished with a timer. But this year, the finite swing count makes its return, and each swing that the participants take will count - home run or not. There will be an end-of-round exception, where the hitter can continue swinging if they go yard on their final swing of the round until one stays in the park.

The eight participants will start Round 1 with 20 swings each in a single pool. The four with the highest home runs totals for the first round will advance to the semifinals, where they'll be seeded by their first round totals. If there is a tiebreaker in the first round, advantage will go to the player who hit the furthest home run.

The semifinal and final rounds will be head-to-head, with 15 swings each. The tiebreaker in the final two rounds is a three-swing swing-off, rather than home run distance. The player with the most home runs in the final round takes home the win.

Who won the 2025 MLB Home Run Derby?

Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh won the 2025 MLB Home Run Derby, defeating Caminero in the final round to become the first catcher to ever win the event. The historic Derby victory was a fitting moment in a greater historic 2025 campaign for Raleigh, whose 60 regular-season long balls set the record for the most single-season home runs by a catcher.
