COLUMBIA, SC – South Carolina forward Joyce Edwards shocks and awes with her ability to weave and move around the court, but she’s not the only one in her family with moves.

“We do dance battles at home,” Edwards said of her family, recently spotted busting a move during the Gamecock’s victory over LSU in the Southeastern Conference tournament.

Her mom, Rasheedah Edwards, and brother, Donovan Edwards, bring plenty of energy to Gamecocks stands watching the forward work her magic inside. It’s become a staple of the South Carolina “fam” culture, and it’s nothing new for Edwards. Her family has been firing up crowds with their dancing since Edwards’ high school games in Camden, South Carolina.

“My brother actually got ejected out of some,” she said, “because he’s kind of crazy.”

It's an energy the Gamecocks need, even as a top seed in the Women’s NCAA Tournament, having been blown out by Texas in the SEC championship.

Edwards confirmed her mom will be in the Colonial Life Arena stands for the Gamecocks’ first-round game against Southern on Saturday and possible second-round game Monday. There is little doubt she will be showing off her South Carolina pride, rallying a raucous crowd.

While a little Edwards family magic may be just the thing to get the Gamecocks back on track, Edwards herself might find the reviving energy a bit embarrassing to watch on the video board.

“I’m looking up and I see them on the screen dancing and I’m like I’m trying to lock in,” she said.

The Edwards family has shown off its talent on Tiktok as well. Edwards’ mom can be seen dancing with Edwards and assorted family on her account. Her most viewed video features her and her daughter in total sync.

Edwards also runs a TikTok account, sporting 12.3K followers, with 10 videos of her moves, collaborating with family and friends alike.

“I really do be dancing all the time,” she said.

They don’t stick to many specific dance moves, Edwards said, preferring to freestyle. But their coordination and energy rile up viewers and players alike.

Forget locking in. The Edwards family knows in March you have to pop and lock in. Peter Bartlett is a student in the University of Georgia's Carmical Sports Media Institute.
