There will be a ton of pressure on the San Francisco 49ers to bounce back after a dreary 6-11 finish to the 2024 campaign. However, there won't be more pressure on anyone than quarterback Brock Purdy.

Purdy is at an interesting spot in his career. He'll likely be starting the season with a massive contract extension under his belt. He'll also be going into his fourth NFL season and his third as the 49ers' full-time starter.

There's also added pressure because 2025 could be a turning point year for Purdy. He showed in 2023 he's capable of winning a Super Bowl. Last season looked like regression as he struggled without some of the 49ers' top offensive weapons. In 2025 he'll be coming off the second consecutive offseason he's had to work on improving as a quarterback instead of preparing for a draft or rehabbing an injury.

If there's a leap for Purdy to make, this is the year to do it, and offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak has been impressed with the QB early in OTAs.

“Yeah, Brock's been great," Kubiak said in a press conference Wednesday. "Brock has almost three full seasons, like two and a half full seasons of tape now where he can really look at his cutups and look at his games over that time period and just kind of study himself and see where he has gotten better, where he needs to continue to get better. He’s a great student of himself. He wants to study himself, he wants to see where he can improve, he wants to be told the truth about what we think about how he can improve. And so he's had a great offseason so far. It's kind of what we expect from Brock.”

Should Purdy struggle again in 2025, it could mean his trajectory is leveling out after a meteoric rise since his excellent debut in 2022. If he makes a leap and plays well regardless of the personnel around him, it could mean there's further ascension ahead for the 25-year-old.

Early returns from OTAs are good. Now the team needs to ensure his contract is done to give him the runway to make another jump forward this season.
