ANAHEIM, Calif. - Houston Astros right-hander Spencer Arrighetti is expected to resume throwing in "the next day or two," manager Joe Espada said Monday, after being placed on the injured list over the weekend due to right foot nerve irritation.

Arrighetti, who left his start Friday in Chicago after one inning due to the foot issue, returned to Houston to be evaluated and received an injection, Espada said. Structurally with the foot, "everything looks like it's going to be fine," Espada said.

Espada said a timeline for Arrighetti to pitch again would be clearer after he progresses to throwing from a mound: "He's still going to be doing his plyos in the weight room, his arm is going to continue to stay in shape. So once he's able to get back off the IL, we'll see what we're going to do then."

Arrighetti is tied for the most starts (17) on Houston's pitching staff this season and third in innings (88). He posted a 1.34 ERA over his first eight starts and was named AL pitcher of the month in May, then compiled an 8.34 ERA in his next nine outings, including the one-inning start in Chicago.

The Astros have not announced how they will fill Arrighetti's rotation spot, which is due Wednesday in the finale of their series at Angel Stadium.

Hayden Wesneski, who is nearing a return from Tommy John surgery, joined the Astros in Anaheim and threw a bullpen Monday. Wesneski is an option to start Wednesday, said Espada, though it would be on four days' rest since his last rehab outing. Houston could also consider a bullpen game that day.

Brice Matthews update​

Outfielder Brice Matthews, who is on the 10-day injured list due to a left knee sprain and rehabbing in Houston, is running, hitting and doing other baseball activities, Espada said. Matthews was placed on the IL on July 17.
