A former Notre Dame pitcher gets one step closer to living his dream of playing in the Major Leagues.
The Houston Astros announced that they have agreed to terms with former Notre Dame right-hander Jack Radel. Radel was picked at No. 28 overall Houston in the 2026 MLB Draft and agreed to a reported $3 million signing bonus.
Radel had one of the strongest resumes ever produced in South Bend. In his junior season, he went 8-3 with a 3.29 ERA over 87 2/3 innings. He showed his control by striking out 116 batters while giving up only 22. Overall in three seasons, he recorded a 19-10 record, with a 3.71 ERA and 211 innings.
In his final season at Notre Dame he showed himself to be the ace of the Notre Dame staff. He made third-team All-American honors and first-team All-ACC attention, finishing as one of the leaders of several ACC statistics.
The Astros added Radel with the idea he could be a premium arm with a starter profile. Draft and scouting reports had him reaching up to 98 miles per hour on his throws with supplementing his power arm with an above average slider, curveball, and changeup.
For Notre Dame, Radel is the latest example of the Irish preparing players to play baseball professionally. His selection and quick signing officially closes the chapter of one of the more prominent prospects ever to come out of South Bend.
