The Houston Astros will move Tatsuya Imai to the bullpen at least for this weekend's series against the Texas Rangers, manager Joe Espada said before Friday's opener.
Imai recorded two outs in his last start Monday at Angel Stadium, part of an up-and-down first MLB season for the right-hander. Imai has lasted fewer than three innings in five of his 15 starts and has a 5.83 ERA in 58 2/3 innings.
Espada left open-ended how long Imai's stint in the bullpen might last. The Astros signed Imai to a three-year, $54 million contract last offeason that includes opt-outs after each year.
Imai has also thrown five quality starts this season and threw the first six innings of a combined no-hitter at Texas. Espada said the Astros sat down with Imai this week in Anaheim to discuss adjustments to work on.
