PHILADELPHIA — While most of the All-Star players spent the evening Monday hanging out at parties, clubs and restaurants after the Home Run Derby, Chicago White Sox rookie center fielder Tristan Peters was stressed out at the local hospital.

Peters, one of the best rags to riches stories to make the All-Star team, even having a 17-game stint with the Savannah Bananas, was enjoying himself at the Derby on Monday, watching teammate Munetaka Murakami, when his phone buzzed.

It was his wife, Erin, who he originally met in Mesa, Arizona at Scootin’ Boots on the Arizona Line Dancing circuit.

She was in bed with their 4-month-old daughter, Elaine.

And couldn’t get up.

Peters rushed to the All-Star downtown hotel and was unable to get his wife out of bed, too.

"I knew we had to get to a hospital," Peters said, "in a hurry."

They called for help, and the next thing they knew they were in a local hospital with Erin undergoing CAT scans, trying to diagnose what was wrong.

They spent the night in the hospital, taking turns watching the baby, with each getting about three hours apiece until leaving at 6 a.m. They went back to the hotel, and Erin’s back felt just barely good enough to walk the All-Star Game Red Carpet with their baby, along with the other All-Stars.

It was a slow, painful stroll, but Erin made it.

Peters then went onto Citizens Bank Park with the rest of his American League All-Star teammates while Erin and Elaine headed back to the hotel.

"Obviously, it’s been a long day, and it’s been tough," Peters said. "The timing is just crazy. I’m glad the CT scan showed she’s fine.

"We’ll see how it goes, but we’ll probably have an MRI in a few days in Toronto."

Peters asked his wife if he needed to stay back at the hotel to be with her and the baby, but Erin declined, knowing that this is the moment of a lifetime that she didn’t want to spoil.

"I’m trying to support her the best I can," Peters said softly, "but I’ve got obligations as well here. She told me to come. She said, 'This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so soak it in.' She’s so amazing."

Peters still doesn’t know the cause of Erin’s back pain that left her immobilized and terrified what was happening, but they believe it might have been caused simply by stress.

Peters was a late addition to the All-Star Game when he got the call a few days ago, and it was a mad scramble to pack, make sudden travel plans, while trying to organize tickets and travel for relatives, including his parents and three younger brothers.

"I think it was just all of the hustle and bustle of finding out I was an All-Star," Peters said. “We were kind of rushing together, and she was all by herself trying to get dressed and stuff like that, while she was carrying the baby around on her bed.

"So, it kind of built up, and then it got really bad."

Peters, who was checking in with his wife while in the AL clubhouse, was still hopeful that his wife could attend the game, but he was unsure if it would be too painful to sit for three hours.

He’s hoping that one day they can laugh about it together, just like his crazy ride when he was traded twice in two months in 2022, made his major-league debut last season with the Tampa Bay Rays, playing just four games, and was designated for assignment in December.

He was traded to the White Sox, won a starting job, and here he is at the All-Star Game, after hitting .301 with an .832 OPS in the White Sox’s surprising first half.

"She’s the reason I’m even here," Peters said. "She was always had faith in me. She means everything to me.

"We’re praying everything will be OK."
