Horseheads, Ithaca boys capture Section 4 titles in lacrosse

Section 4 Class A and B boys lacrosse finals at Horseheads High School on Saturday, May 30 featured a memorable comeback from Ithaca and a dominant effort by Horseheads.

Ithaca rallied for an 8-7 victory in the Class A final, denying Corning a seventh consecutive Section 4 title. The Little Red picked up their first championship since 2018.

Horseheads secured its first sectional championship in 10 years with a 13-3 triumph in the Class B contest.

Nine players scored for top-seeded Horseheads, which led 6-0 at halftime and 12-0 through three quarters.

"I could not be prouder of these boys and their commitment to daily improvement," Horseheads head coach Jason Neubauer said.

"Hats off to Binghamton on a great season."

Horseheads' Brogan Sullivan had 4 assists, including the 100th of his career, along with a goal.

Other scorers for Horseheads: Seamus Lynch 3 goals, 1 assist; Zack Bennett 2 goals, 1 assist; Owen Johanson 2 goals; Keenan McCarthy 1 goal, 1 assist; and 1 goal each from Boe Briggs, Colin Phillips, Johnny Lowe, and Connor McAllister.

Briggs went 17-for-17 on faceoffs and had 13 ground balls. His effort recalled the Raiders' last sectional title, which saw big brother Garrette Briggs go 21-for-23 on faceoffs in a 13-11 victory over Vestal in 2016.

Ben Potter had 7 saves in net for Horseheads, with Graham Thompson stopping 2 shots.

Ty Miller, Trisetan Durham, and Lyshawn Forbes had the goals for Binghamton (6-11).

Up next: Horseheads (11-6) will face a Section 2 foe in a New York State Public High School Athletic Association sub-regional at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 3 at Ithaca High School.

After Ithaca scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to even the score, Isaac Lee-Byrnes scored the winning goal with 12 seconds remaining.

Ithaca won the ensuing faceoff and ran out the clock.

Lee-Byrnes and Reginald Browne scored 3 goals each for the Little Red. Lee Milton and Quentin Getzin had the other goals.

Joe Fucito and Parker Chapel had 2 goals apiece for Corning. Clayton Smith had a goal and 2 assists; Kohl Hogue a goal and an assist; and Bradyn Zimmerman a goal.

Corning finished with a 13-4 record, losing twice to Ithaca in three meetings.

Up next: Ithaca (15-3) will play on its home field in a sub-regional against the Section 3 champion at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 3.
