BATON ROUGE – Lane Kiffin is brining back Ed Orgeron to LSU football.
The first-year Tigers head coach has hired the former LSU head coach as a special assistant to defense and recruiting for his staff and program.
Per records obtained by The Daily Advertiser, Orgeron and LSU officially agreed to a $100,000 contract that spans from May 21, 2026 through January 2027. The term sheet was signed Thursday. Coach O, as he's affectionately known, will make roughly $5,000 per month helping Kiffin and his LSU staff with recruiting and the defense.

If Oregon is terminated prior to the end of the deal, Orgreon is owed the full remaining salary and if Orgeron leaves LSU, he will owe the school the remaining total. LSU will also provide Orgeron a vehicle.
The Daily Advertiser reported Wednesday that Kiffin hired Oregon to join his staff.
As head coach, Orgeron guided the Tigers to the 2019 national championship and coached arguably college football's greatest offense of all-time that featured quarterback Joe Burrow. He was fired less than two years after winning the title as LSU went 11-11 over the next two seasons. Over five-plus seasons, Orgeron had a 51-20 record as LSU's head coach.
He was let go in October of the 2021 season. Orgeron has not coached since his firing from LSU and his joining Kiffin's staff isn't as surprising as it may seem. The two coaches have had a longstanding friendship and working relationship dating back to the their days at Tennessee and USC more than 15 years ago when Kiffin served as head coach at both institutions and Orgeron as associate head coach, recruiting coordinator, defensive coordinator and defensive line coach.
When Kiffin was fired from USC in 2013, Orgeron served as the interim head coach for the Trojans and both coaches have been the Ole Miss head football coach at separate stints.
After firing Orgeron, LSU was on the hook for a $16.9 million buyout. Those payments to him concluded this past December.
