Australian sprint sensation Gout Gout is out for the rest of the athletics season with a severe hamstring injury.

The 18-year old said on Thursday an MRI scan has revealed that he tore a tendon in his left hamstring during training in Brisbane the previous day.

"I am very disappointed but I have no other possibility but to accept the situation. I understand this is part of athletics," Gout said on Instagram.

"My focus now will be on my rehab in the coming weeks and months and ensuring that I come back in 2027 better and stronger and faster."

Gout was set to compete at the under-20 world championships next month in Eugene, Oregon.

He would have been a clear favourite in the 200 metres where three months ago he set an Oceania record and U20 world record by clocking 19.67 seconds.

His running style and fast times have led to comparisons with Jamaican legend Usain Bolt, who was not as fast as Gout at that age.

Australian Athletics said: "While this will be disappointing for Gout himself as well as his many fans, unfortunately injuries are part of the sport, and it is important that he takes the time to rehabilitate, recover and return to the track to compete when he is ready.

"Gout has had a phenomenal couple of years, and has a long and exciting athletics career ahead of him."
