Former Washington Redskins running back John Riggins sold his Super Bowl XVII game day jersey.
Riggins, who is part of the most iconic play in Washington's history, appeared on Pro Football Talk last week during the buildup to Super Bowl LX. Riggins, speaking with hosts Mike Florio and Chris Simms, said his jersey, which had not been washed since the game, would go on sale at the 18th Annual Super Bowl Live Auction, conducted by Hunt Auctions in partnership with the NFL.
In that game, Riggins carried the ball 38 times for 166 yards, both Super Bowl records at the time. The biggest play in franchise history occurred in the final quarter with Washington trailing Miami 17-13. The Redskins faced a 4th-and-1 at the Miami 43. TE Clint Didier lined up tight left, went in motion right, turned around, reversing back to his left. As he did so, Miami corner Don McNeal slipped, rose again to his feet, but found himself the only player with a shot at Riggins.
Riggins had been handed the ball by Joe Theismann on his way to running right between LT Joe Jacoby and LG Russ Grimm. On the play, Didier kicks out the Dolphins' edge defender, Jacoby gets his man, as does Grimm, and FB Otis Wonsley gets his man as well. Thus, Riggins was only left to face McNeal. McNeal hit Riggins but fell off of No. 44, who not only had the first down, but then sprinted down the left sideline for the 43-yard go-ahead score, providing the Redskins a 20-17 lead.
So, what happened with Riggins' dirty jersey? The game-worn jersey used by John Riggins in Super Bowl XVII sold for $470,000 Saturday! This far exceeded its pre-sale estimate of $100,000–$200,000. Riggins immediately voiced that when the franchise chose the name "Commanders," he felt disenfranchised. He apparently means it, selling more valuable "Redskins" memorabilia.
Here is rest of that memorabilia:
Joe Jacoby, still unfairly not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, also sold his three Super Bowl-winning jerseys, which totaled $55,225, while a helmet from his playing days sold for $14,158.
