Grayson Rodriguez made his debut with the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday during the Freeway Series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Although giving up seven earned runs in 3.2 innings was not the ideal start, Rodriguez is taking a step in the right direction after being sidelined since July 2024 with injuries.
“With rehab and stuff, there were a lot of dark days, so today was special for me just to be able to take the mound on a big league field,” Rodriguez said, per MLB. “It came down to leaving offspeed pitches up. I thought I threw some really good pitches. That’s a really good lineup, but in big spots with runners on base, offspeed pitches were left up, they were able to put the bat on the ball and score some runs.”

In addition to the seven earned runs, Rodriguez walked four batters and gave up seven hits against the Dodgers, resulting in a 10-1 loss for the Angels. The loss completed the Dodgers’ Freeway Series sweep.
Rodriguez said he felt healthy after the start, which is great news for the 26-year-old. He was sidelined with right shoulder inflammation at the beginning of the 2026 season and missed the second half of the 2024 season and al of the 2025 season with a lat strain and bone spurs.
“The good thing is every pitch I threw I felt great,” Rodriguez said, per MLB. “I was able to reach back and get it. Coming out of that one healthy, all we can do is just look ahead and build off of it and move forward.”
To activate Rodriguez from the IL, the Angels optioned reliever Alek Manoah to Triple-A.
Both Rodriguez and Manoah are new additions to the Angels’ roster this season. Los Angeles acquired Rodriguez for outfielder Taylor Ward in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles in November then signed Manoah as a free agent in December.
