As part of the fun surrounding our 50th anniversary, Golfweek has been walking down Memory Lane with a number of former employees who helped make the brand what it is today.

We continue the series with an editor who helped shape careers for decades, Craig Horan.

When did you work at Golfweek?

May 1997-October 2016

What was your Golfweek title, and give us a brief description of what you did.

Copy editor, 1997-1998. Managing editor, 1998-2016. I started as a copy editor involved with editing stories from staff and freelance writers, as well as compiling various roundups and features. In early 1998, I was promoted to managing editor and was the editorial lead on production of each Golfweek issue. My responsibilities included page allocation, editing stories, proofing pages and production of the weekly magazine.

What's your current title and company?

Retired. I retired in December 2024 following a 40-year career in fast-paced, deadline-driven fields, including daily newspaper and golf magazine publishing, as well as law firm marketing and communications.

What's the one moment you're proudest of while working with Golfweek?

Over 19-plus years, how do you pinpoint just one? It’s truly a career highlight to say I worked at Golfweek during its heyday and through the bulk of the Tiger Woods Era. We published some great articles and issues over the years, including an examination of the PGA Tour pension program, Payne Stewart’s untimely death, annual Amateur Issue and several previews and reviews from major championships. I am grateful to have worked with so many talented writers (including the late Jeff Babineau, Ron Balicki and Jim Achenbach as well as Jeff Rude, Adam Schupak, Beth Ann Nichols, Alistair Tait and Jason Lusk, among others). I am also proud to say that I helped mentor and guide several younger colleagues who “cut their teeth” at Golfweek before moving on to careers at other golf media and industry outlets.

What's the 'hair-on-fire' moment you remember most vividly?

Every Monday! … and the dreaded Monday finishes of tour events.
For the reader’s background, Golfweek’s production days of the weekly issues during my tenure were Sundays and Mondays. With tournaments ending on Sundays, the desk editors and website team worked late on Sundays and returned to the office early Monday to get the magazine into production with printing later on Monday. There were many, many long production days.

What's your favorite golf course you've played and why?

Honey Hill Country Club in Newport, N.Y. (now known as The Golf Club of Newport). This is the upstate New York course where I learned the game playing alongside my mom and dad, and brothers. It was a hilly, tree-lined course designed in 1967 by Geoffrey Cornish that overlooked the Kuyahoora Valley in the southern foothills of the Adirondack Mountains.

(Editor's note: We appreciate all the former employees who have contributed time and effort to this feature. The golf journalism community is a small one and we're proud of the achievements of all our former colleagues.)
