Meadow Tian added to her impressive list of pre-college accomplishments Friday, July 17, by outlasting the field to win the 103rd Women’s Ohio Amateur Championship at Moraine Country Club.
The victory earned Tian a spot in the U.S. Women’s Amateur at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee, on August 4-9.
Tian, who will be a freshman at Illinois this fall, began the week with rounds of 72 and 70 to place second in the qualifying rounds and enter the 32-player match play tournament as the No. 2 seed. She completed her quest with a 3 and 2 victory over Bowling Green’s Addison Kartusch in the 36-hole final.
Tian took the lead on the third hole and led by three twice until Kartusch won holes 13, 14 and 15 to tie the match. Tian regained the lead on 17. On the second 18, Kartusch forged ties on holes 2 and 5. But Tian regained control and led by four twice until both players parred 16. That left Tian up three with two holes to play and ended the match.
Tian, an Olentangy High School graduate, won the 2025 Division I individual state championship. In 2025, Tian also was the Southern Ohio Junior PGA champion, the Central Ohio district player of the year and the Ohio Girls Junior champion. In 2024, she finished second in the state high school tournament.
Tian reached the final with two dominant wins Thursday. In the quarterfinals, she defeated Furman’s Audrey Ryu of Dublin 4 and 2 and Columbus Academy senior Eva Lim 5 and 4.
Kartusch defeated Ohio University player and Centerville graduate Morgan Rodgers in Wednesday's first round of match play. Then she eliminated Sarah Willis, the former Penn State player and two-time state champion from Eaton.
On Thursday, Kartusch defeated Kent State’s Kristen Belden of Canton 3 and 1. Then she defeated Rutgers sophomore Elizabeth Ryu of Dublin 2 and 1 in the semifinals.
Zitzner seventh: Springfield 12-year-old Chaz Zitzner placed seventh at the Junior World Championships at Torrey Pines in San Diego on Thursday.
Zitzner fell off the pace on the first day with a 77 because of a quintuple-bogey 9 on his third hole and a double-bogey 6 three holes later. But he rallied with a
pair of 2-under par 70s to finish the tournament at 1-over par.
Yubo Shen of Thailand won the 11-12 age division at 9-under par with rounds of 72, 67 and 68.
Springfield City Amateur: Sixty-six players will tee it up Saturday on the Reid Park South Course in the annual Springfield City Amateur. The final round will be played Sunday.
