The Masters is a sporting event that commands respect.
For patrons on site, there is no running. There are no phones. It’s a place of decorum and traditions that have been upheld for 90 years at Augusta National.
But at this year’s par three contest, brash, popular culture seeped through the cracks of this prestigious event. Former NFL offensive lineman and current sports TV personality, Jason Kelce, featured prominently on ESPN’s coverage of the event, and golf fans fumed.

Golf fans fume at Jason Kelce after his appearance at The Masters
Kelce, dressed in a Masters caddie’s uniform, dominated the airwaves throughout ESPN’s broadcast, and many golf fans took to social media to express their disgust.
Some thought Augusta National should be held to a higher standard instead of embracing pop culture: “I thought the Masters were coming to town, not the circus .. Smdh” one fan posted to X, and another added:
“This is so stupid. This idiot does not belong at Augusta or any place near the Masters. What a bad decision and a terrible disaster for Kelce being at Augusta.”
After Kelce made an appearance at TGL a few weeks ago, some fans are simply sick of seeing him everywhere. One fan said, “Dear ESPN – We do not want Jason Kelce shoved down our throats.”
Another said, “ESPN should do an alternative stream where you don’t have to see Jason Kelce the entire time. It would do numbers.”
This was met with near-universal disapproval, which led fans to wonder how this was approved in the first place: “Masters fans are united on one thing: They are sick of the Kelce bros lol.
“Read these comments, it’s crazy. 99% against. Which makes me wonder, who exactly is asking for this? What demo wants to see a Kelce bro in every single thing that’s ever on TV? There must be another world somewhere lol.”
Another fan expressed their disappointment that The Masters stooped to this level, ”ESPN used to be Stuart Scott, Chris Berman, Rick Eisen and so many others that built careers with charisma and talent.
“Now they force this c–p down people’s throats … and it’s not even remotely entertaining. I wouldn’t be surprised if The Masters haven’t already made the phone call to make sure this never happens again.”
And Kelce wasn’t the only celebrity appearance that drove fans up the wall.
Bryson DeChambeau under fire for Kevin Hart Masters appearance
Bryson DeChambeau, who is deep into the online space with his increasingly popular YouTube channel, brought Kevin Hart along to caddie for him at the par-three contest. As you would expect, fans were not happy.
“Please make it stop”, was the sentiment from fans, as another fan posted to X, “Don’t make me hate the masters bro… plz.”
One fan said they thought The Masters was above this type of stunt: “Not everything needs to be pop culture. Thought @TheMasters was immune.”
Another person posted: “That sound you just heard was Bobby Jones rolling over in his grave…
“On live ESPN telecast of the Masters Par 3 contest, Hoatong Li just dropped an F-bomb while taking a photo with Kevin Hart. I love the Par 3 contest, but things are getting a bit out of hand for.”
As many of the other golfers at the event used the event to spend quality time with their families and friends, DeChambeau instead invited a celebrity. Some fans thought that said all you needed to know about the 32-year-old:
“Bryson bringing an unpopular comedic actor to the Par 3 contest over friends/family is the most on-brand thing I’ve ever seen…”
Another fan said, “Being in your early 30s, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, one of the greatest golfers of your era and not having a family like your contemporary, instead spending your time with an overexposed burnout like Kevin Hart is such a sad way to live.”
After this online reaction, perhaps The Masters will reconsider this decision to lean into pop culture.
