The situation between George Pickens and the Dallas Cowboys has become one of the biggest topics for discussion of the 2026 NFL offseason. Tension continues to build regarding his long-term future with the franchise, as he is currently playing under the franchise tag.

However, NFL insider Jeremy Fowler shared some encouraging updates on Saturday.

"He signed the franchise tag, $27 million, hasn't really been a fixture in the building, kind of stayed away a little bit but I'm told he has worked with Dak Prescott this offseason offsite," Fowler said via Adam Wells of Bleacher Report while appearing on ESPN's Sportscenter.

"Loves being a Cowboy, loves a long-term deal more. They weren't able to get one, but they're hopeful down the road they can work it out. But I don't expect a holdout at this point, should be locked in for the Cowboys in 2026.”

The franchise tag guarantees Pickens a salary of $27.3 million for the upcoming season. Since he still lacks long-term financial security, he has chosen to skip voluntary offseason workouts. That situation has fueled trade speculation, with prediction markets even connecting him to several other teams.

NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero also spoke on the situation during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show. He said that while he currently expects Pickens to stay with the Cowboys for the 2026 season, he could not completely rule out the possibility of circumstances changing. He explained that factors such as injuries, roster needs, and unexpected developments can quickly alter situations in the NFL, but at this moment he still believes Pickens will remain with the Cowboys.

According to multiple NFL insiders, Jerry and Stephen Jones reportedly want to see a larger body of work before committing record-level money to Pickens in a long-term extension. Part of that hesitation reportedly comes from past concerns surrounding his maturity and consistency dating back to his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, Pickens delivered an outstanding 2025 season, emerging as the centerpiece of the Cowboys’ offense after recording 93 receptions, 1,429 receiving yards, and 9 touchdowns.
