UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma has broken his silence on the highly criticized sideline tantrum during the Huskies’ Final Four loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks on Friday night.

During the fourth quarter of the team’s loss, Auriemma confronted South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley, which led to a heated exchange near midcourt.

Auriemma was upset about a perceived pre-game slight from Staley and sparked the incident. After the game, Auriemma immediately stormed off the court without shaking hands with the Gamecocks or consoling his players.

There’s no excuse for how I handled the end of the game vs. South Carolina,” Auriemma said. “It’s unlike what I do and what our standard is here at Connecticut. I want to apologize to the staff and the team at South Carolina. It was uncalled for in how I reacted.

“The story should be how well South Carolina played, and I don’t want my actions to detract from that. I’ve had a great relationship with their staff, and I sincerely want to apologize to them.”

It was disappointing to see Auriemma crash out as his team was falling apart on the court, and it would have been great to see him apologize to Dawn Staley by name. Staley was an assistant coach under Auriemma for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

In the meantime, Staley and the Gamecocks will turn their attention to Sunday afternoon, where they will face off against the UCLA Bruins for the title. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
