FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Frostburg State clinched a share of the Mountain East Conference championship and a berth in the NCAA playoffs with a 35-18 win at Fairmont State on Saturday.
The Bobcats (9-2, 7-1 MEC) share the league title with Charleston (8-3, 7-1 MEC), but they snagged the MEC's automatic bid by defeating Charleston, 34-32, in double overtime on Oct. 18 to win the head-to-head tiebreak.
The NCAA postseason appearance is Frostburg State's first as a member of Division 2.
Frosburg State led Fairmont (6-5, 3-5 MEC) 7-0 after the first quarter, 14-3 at the half and 21-10 going into the fourth.
Fairmont State cut its deficit to 27-18 following an 18-yard passing touchdown from Nino Marzullo to Joey Ramsey with 7:26 remaining, but KJ Smothers secured a Bobcat victory with a two-yard rushing score at the 2:44 mark.
Smothers was part of a Frostburg State rushing attack that gained 276 yards on 46 carries. Owen Doyle had 20 runs for 107 yards and two scores, and Smothers added 96 yards on 14 totes.
Frostburg's Jordan Brooks completed 15 of 21 passes for 212 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Cruiz Paul-Umstead caught both touchdowns, part of his six receptions for 87 yards.
Jevonn Gilyard snagged four passes for 93 yards.
Frostburg State's secondary limited Marzullo to a paltry 11 for 26 through the air for 75 yards.
LeJay Hatcher had 17 runs for 125 yards, and Marzullo rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown.
Kamari Ramsey intercepted a pass for Frostburg. Jaylen Boyd and Christian Taylro had sacks.
Mountain Ridge graduate Tyler Cook was 3 for 4 on extra points.
Frostburg will find out its seeding during the NCAA selection show on Sunday at 6 p.m. The playoffs feature 32 teams, 16 automatic qualifiers and 16 at-large selections.
