It’s June, and like every year, the nation is abuzz with trade talk, and the Rockets’ fanbase is certainly no different.

Meanwhile, Houston’s front office is probably staring at Fred VanVleet’s contract. Not as fun, sure, but probably more important.
VanVleet missed the entire 2025-26 season after suffering a torn ACL, which already made Houston’s year more complicated than it needed to be. Now his deal sits in the middle of a bigger roster puzzle.
Alperen Sengun’s extension is already on the books. Jabari Smith Jr. got paid. Kevin Durant isn't getting any cheaper. Tari Eason is headed toward restricted free agency. Amen Thompson’s extension conversation is creeping closer by the day.
That adds up fast.
According to recent reporting by Sports Illustrated's Jed Katz, the Rockets could explore restructuring VanVleet’s deal again, spreading money over a longer timeline to make for more short-term flexibility. Translation: the less exciting cap moves would decide how much of this roster Houston actually gets to keep.
Fred VanVleet’s contract isn’t going to generate nearly as many clicks as the latest superstar trade rumor, and neither will luxury tax projections. Unfortunately, that’s the part of team building Houston has arrived at.
The Rockets have spent years collecting and developing talent. Now comes the challenge of keeping it together. VanVleet’s contract restructuring won’t determine whether Houston lands the next big name this summer, but it could play a major role in whether the Rockets can afford to keep the names they already have.
Not every offseason move comes with a press conference. A lot of them just happen on a spreadsheet.
