Under former head coach Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M's quarterback issues reached comical levels amid mounting injuries, aside from Fisher inheriting reliable signal-caller Kellen Mond, who lasted four seasons without missing a single game.
During his final season at the helm, Fisher and the Aggies began 2023 with high expectations with redshirt freshman quarterback Conner Weigman, but during A&M's fourth game of the season vs. Auburn, Weigman suffered a foot injury that prematurely ended his first starting season, leading to veteran transfer QB Max Johnson stepping in for the rest of the year.
After defeating Auburn, Texas A&M would lose to Alabama at home and Tennessee on the road, before defeating South Carolina at home, while Max Johnson, who took quite the beating in the pocket, nearly brought the Aggies back against No. 10 Ole Miss, while reportedly playing with broken ribs, ending his season after the 38-35 defeat.
This loss likely served as the final nail in Jimbo Fisher's Texas A&M coaching career, and after current head coach Mike Elko was hired just weeks after the 2023 season ended, Max Johnson re-entered the transfer portal, choosing North Carolina as his next destination.
However, after suffering a near career-ending leg injury, Johnson fought his way back to the field for one more season with the Tarheels, but has since transferred to Georgia Southern for his sixth and final college season, making The Athletic's"All-Geezer Team" ahead of the 2026 season.
That's quite the list of former head coaches for the son of Super Bowl-winning quarterback Brad Johnson, and while Max isn't guaranteed to start for Georgia Southern this season, the fact that he is still playing after his brutal leg injury is a testament to his toughness and passion for the game.
