While Texas A&M fans are busy campaigning for athletic director Trev Alberts to lock down Bucky McMillan with a new contract before the SEC schedule even hits the home stretch, another familiar name in Aggieland is stepping back into the coaching spotlight.

On Sunday, former Texas A&M head coach Mark Turgeon agreed to a five‑year deal to become the next head coach of Kansas City Men’s Basketball, with his tenure officially beginning in March. The move marks Turgeon’s return to the bench after more than three years away from the game.

Turgeon’s coaching résumé stretches well beyond his four seasons in College Station. Before arriving at Texas A&M in 2007, he led Jacksonville State and Wichita State, compiling a 153–115 record across both stops. His breakthrough came at Wichita State, where he guided the Shockers to the Sweet 16 in 2006—the program’s first appearance in 25 years—and earned Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year honors.

He then succeeded Billy Gillispie at Texas A&M, inheriting a program coming off back‑to‑back NCAA Tournament runs. While Turgeon didn’t quite replicate Gillispie’s peak, he delivered one of the most consistent stretches in school history. The Aggies reached four straight NCAA Tournaments under his watch and posted a 97–40 overall record, though they never advanced past the Round of 32.

In 2011, Turgeon left for Maryland, where he spent 11 seasons highlighted by five NCAA Tournament appearances, a 2015 Sweet 16 run, and a Big Ten Coach of the Year award. His tenure ended in December 2021 when he and the university mutually agreed to part ways.

After stepping away from coaching for several seasons, Turgeon now returns to his home city with an opportunity to rebuild and reenergize the Kansas City program. And while the Aggies are fully locked in on the Bucky McMillan era, Turgeon’s re‑entry into the coaching ranks adds another chapter to the legacy of former A&M leaders making their mark across college basketball.
