The Chicago Bears have signed linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, a former star at Northeast and Tennessee football, to their active roster ahead of their NFC divisional round playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams on Jan. 18.
The nine-year NFL veteran was signed to the Bears' practice squad on Nov. 18. He played in three games during the regular season and appeared in Chicago's wild card game against the Green Bay Packers, which the Bears won 31-27.
Reeves-Maybin was added to the roster in replacement of linebacker T.J. Edwards, who was placed on injured reserve on Jan. 13.
At Northeast from 2009-12, Reeves-Maybin was a two-way star and twice led the Eagles to the TSSAA football playoffs quarterfinals. He racked up nearly 8,000 all-purpose yards and 100 touchdowns in his career as a quarterback and combined for 234 tackles during his final two seasons, earning All-State honors as a senior.
Reeves-Maybin played for the Vols under coach Butch Jones from 2013-16. He had 240 tackles and eight sacks during his Tennessee career and was named second-team All-SEC as a junior after tallying 105 stops, 14 tackles for loss, six sacks, four pass deflections, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
The Detroit Lions selected Reeves-Maybin in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft and he played his first five seasons with them before signing with the Houston Texans in 2022. He returned to the Lions in 2023 and was voted to the Pro Bowl and named second-team All-Pro on special teams that season. The Lions signed him to a two-year, $7.5 million contract ahead of 2024 but released him last March to clear cap space.
For his professional career, Reeves-Maybin has played in 117 games and made 160 tackles (63 on special teams), nine TFLs, five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He currently serves as the president of the NFL Players Association.
