Not everyone is sold on the offensive upgrades the Pittsburgh Steelers made this offseason, but former offensive coordinator Todd Haley compared the team's current receiving corps to a legendary NFL trio.
Haley, who served as the Steelers offensive coordinator from 2012 to 2017, compared the receiver trio of DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman Jr., and Germie Bernard to an all-time great group he coached with the Arizona Cardinals: Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, and Steve Breaston.
“Michael Pittman is a solid 1B, 2A, however you want to look at it,” Haley said via The Pump Fake podcast. “He’s experienced, he understands how to play. I’m sure he and Aaron [Rodgers] will get on the same page very quickly. DK's got another year with Aaron, so that'll be helpful. And as you said, Bernard, he’s a key component. How quickly can he come along? It’s hard as a young receiver to just show up and all of a sudden play against NFL coverages and defenses.
“So, [their new wide receivers] are huge. When you have just one, it’s nice, but defenses can take one away. But when you have two, and maybe three, that’s what we had the benefit of having in Arizona. We not only had a great quarterback that understood where to throw the football and did it accurately, we had [the question] of who are you going to add extra coverage to? Larry Fitzgerald? Anquan Boldin? And if you do that, Steve Breaston was obviously fast enough to hurt you pretty quickly.”
Fitzgerald, Boldin, and Breaston were one of five trios in NFL history where each player reached 1,000 receiving yards. It's safe to say Haley has high hopes for Metcalf, Pittman, and Bernard in 2026.
While the current Steelers receiving corps is better than most are giving it credit for, there is one free-agent All-Pro wideout who sent a strong message to the NFL. And he definitely would help form an all-time great trio in Pittsburgh.
