A former Michigan State defensive lineman has been selected in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Former Spartans standout Derrick Harmon was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the No. 21 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday.

Harmon played three seasons for Michigan State before transferring to Oregon ahead of last season. During his time with the Spartans, Harmon appeared in 28 games, where he recorded 71 tackles (seven for loss), 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. This past season with the Ducks, Harmon recorded 45 tackles (11 for loss), five sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

While it may not feel the same for Spartans' fans if Harmon hadn't left for Oregon this past season, this is still a pretty cool achievement for a former Michigan State player. Congratulations to Harmon, and good luck at the next level with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
