Former San Jose Sharks defenseman Nikolai Knyzhov is heading back to his home country, as the Russian has signed with SKA St. Petersburg for the 2026-27 season.

Knyzhov had a short stint in the Kontinental Hockey League during the 2018-19 season, when he appeared in three games for SKA. The following season, he made the jump back to North America when he joined the Sharks on an entry-level contract. He'd remain in the organization through the 2023-24 season.

All-in-all, Knyzhov played in 81 games with the Sharks, registering 12 points (three goals and nine assists) and 55 penalty minutes. He also featured in 92 games with the San Jose Barracuda in the American Hockey League, picking up four goals and 17 assists.

Since departing the Sharks organization, Knyzhov was a regular in the AHL, most recently playing with the Abbotsford Canucks last season. Now, he'll look to establish himself in Europe's biggest league against more top-tier competition.

At SKA, Knyzhov will team up with another former Shark, Nikolai Goldobin, who will be in his second season with St. Petersburg.
