Former Buffalo Sabre Chris Drury has been widely criticized for his handling of the New York Rangers roster this season. Last year’s President’s Trophy winner dealt a number of veterans that caused internal strife and the club to miss the playoffs, but owner James Dolan showed his support for his GM on Wednesday, giving him a multi-year contract extension.

“I am pleased that Chris will continue to lead the Rangers hockey operations in his role as President and General Manager,” Dolan said in a press release. “Over his tenure, Chris has shown passion for the Rangers, relentless work ethic, and a tireless pursuit of excellence. While we are all disappointed in what transpired this past season, I am confident in his ability to guide this organization to success.”

Questions Yet To Be Answered If Adams Will Remain As Sabres GM

Sabres Ownership Ranked Worst In NHL By Survey In The Athletic

Drury controversially waived veteran forward Barclay Goodrow to get around his limited no-trade clause, dealt team captain Jacob Trouba, and moved out young players like Kaapo Kakko and Filip Chytil in an attempt to improve and shake up the club, but the club finished six points in back of Montreal for the last Eastern Conference wildcard spot.

The recent success of Drury may have given him more rope with Rangers ownership, but we are yet to see what kind of shakeup is in store for the Sabres, as GM Kevyn Adams is expected to meet with owner Terry Pegula soon to discuss the future of the club in the wake of their missing the playoffs for the fifth time under his leadership. Adams could be moved into a Team President role, with a new GM being hired, or he remains in his current position with a new staff. It seems unlikely that Adams will be dismissed outright, since he took part in players’ exit interviews and met with the media last Saturday, but there is nothing for certain until his meeting with Pegula.
