Former Royal Palm Beach star Triston McKenzie is waiting for a new home.

The Cleveland Guardians designated McKenzie, 27, for assignment early Monday afternoon, signaling the end to the pitcher's time on the team's 40-man roster.

Following an impressive 2022 season in which he appeared primed to become the Guardians' long-term ace, an injury-shortened 2023 season led to command issues and a bloated 11.12 ERA and 2.47 WHIP spanning four appearances out of the bullpen at the start of the 2025 season.

Teams will have seven days to sign McKenzie. Should he clear waivers, Cleveland will have the option to release him, trade him, or assign him to a minor league affiliate.

DFS decision a far-cry from Triston McKenzie's 2022 stats

Despite starting the season with an unblemished effort against the San Diego Padres, three subsequent appearances have ballooned McKenzie's stats to an 11.12 ERA and 2.47 WHIP on the year.

It's possible the final straw for Cleveland was a poor late-inning outing against the Baltimore Orioles in which McKenzie allowed four earned runs on on three hits, including a home-run, that nearly doubles his earned run average on the year.

The rough start to the 2025 season has been a disappointment for Cleveland, who watched their young pitcher's fall from grace after an impressive 2022 campaign.

That year, McKenzie compiled a 2.96 ERA across 31 games (30 starts) as the team's No. 2 starter in the rotation, striking out 190 hitters on the year.

From July 1, 2022 until the end of the season, McKenzie held the third-best ERA in the American League, behind only Dylan Cease and Shohei Ohtani.

What is Triston McKenzie's contract situation with the Guardians?

McKenzie was signed on a $1.95 million contract prior to the start of the 2025 season.

Despite being on contract for multiple years past this year, the new deal was helpful in avoiding arbitration.

The deal was agreed on by both parties despite McKenzie's struggles in 2024, a season in which he pitched to a 5.11 ERA across 16 starts following an injury-riddled 2023 season that saw the pitcher tally just four starts.

Zak Kent called up by Guardians in corresponding move

In conjunction with McKenzie's designation for assignment, Zak Kent has been called up by Cleveland.

Kent, 27, has compiled a 2.35 ERA and 0.91 ERA across five minor league appearances this year, allowing just a .125 batting average across those games with 7.2 innings pitched.

Kent was previously on the Guardians' major league roster, but when he makes his first appearance this year, it will be his major-league debut.
