Jan Mursak was with the Detroit Red Wings only briefly, but the Slovenian forward has enjoyed a long and productive professional hockey career.

One that he thought was all over. Now, however, Mursak is having second thoughts about calling it quits. There is a significant caveat attached to his desire to keep on going, though.

“I would like to continue playing, but only if there is a team with which I see a chance of winning the championship,” Mursak told German website Kronen Zeitung.

Mursak, 38, has spent the past three seasons in Austria, skating for Klagenfurt AC Red Jackets. They are the sixth team he’s suited up for since leaving the Red Wings organization in 2013.

Mursak admits that he is willing to leave Klagenfurt unless the club is ready to upgrade the roster. And he’s frank in his assessment of what the team must do to keep him in the fold.

“We need to bring in someone on defense, and we have to replace two or three top players on offense,” Mursak said.

“Don’t get me wrong: I like Klagenfurt, I like KAC,” Mursak adds quickly, before immediately returning to the harsh critique of his club.

His message to Klagenfurt management is basically, if you snooze, you’ll lose.

“The longer you wait, the smaller the chance of getting suitable players,” Mursak said.

Klagenfurt’s Canadian coach Kirk Furey isn’t taken aback by the bluntness of his most experienced player.

“That’s just Jan,” Furey said. The coach knows that his team is better with Mursak in the fold.

“He’s the best player since I’ve been in Klagenfurt,” Furey said.

He spent three seasons with the Red Wings

Mursak’s NHL experience amounted to 44 games with the Red Wings over three seasons between 2010 and 2013. His output as an NHLer was two goals and two assists. Mursak was the second Slovenian player to score an NHL goal.

He also spent six seasons with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins. Mursak won a Calder Cup title with Grand Rapids in 2013.

Mursak played for Slovenia in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
