As historic Mexico City club Atlante prepares for its return to Liga MX, it has announced an old favorite as its new manager. Miguel Herrera, the former Mexico manager who most recently failed to take Costa Rica to the World Cup, has been announced as the new manager of Los Potros de Hierro, taking over the team for the third time.
Herrera was a key midfielder for the club when they won the league, then called the Mexican Primera, in the 1992-93 campaign. After finishing his playing career with Atlante, he took his first managerial job with the team. Herrera went on to other teams around the country, notably landing at Club América before taking over the Mexico national team as El Tri was struggling to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The fiery Herrera clinched qualification and became a fan favorite, but was fired after getting in a physical altercation with a commentator at an airport the day after winning the 2015 Gold Cup. He returned to management with stints at Tijuana, América - adding a 2018 Apertura title to his trophy case - and Tigres before the frustrating run with Costa Rica.
He now takes over an Atlante team that has been in the second division for more than a dozen years. This season, the club finished eighth in the table, playing its games in Zacatepec, Morelos, far from its historic base in Mexico City.
Mexican soccer still has not reinstated promotion and relegation, but Atlante's owners bought the first-division franchise rights from the club operating in Mazatlan. That will see a fourth Mexico City team in the top division, with three of those teams expected to play at the renovated Estadio Azteca.
Atlante will play its home matches on Friday nights at the historic venue, with Club América and Cruz Azul alternating Saturday home contests.
The Liga MX playoffs being May 2, with the new season starting July 16, giving Herrera plenty of time to prepare his new squad to be first-division ready.
