The New York Knicks experienced defeat for the first time in 46 days on Monday night as the San Antonio Spurs stormed back to claim a crucial 115-111 victory in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. The win marked San Antonio’s first win of the series against Jalen Brunson and the Knicks, while also ending New York’s remarkable playoff run. However, one controversial sequence involving Victor Wembanyama and Brunson quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the night.
During Monday’s game, Brunson attempted to deny Wembanyama position and prevent the Spurs star from getting a clean look, the French phenom responded with a hard two-handed shove. It appeared to strike Brunson around the head and neck area. The contact sent the Knicks guard crashing to the floor, yet officials allowed play to continue without calling a foul.
The no-call immediately sparked debate among fans. Former NBA guard Stephon Marbury also did not hold back while expressing his frustration over Wembanyama’s actions.
“Wemby’s international. They play dirty overseas,” Marbury said. “If I watch film & see Wemby throw somebody on my team, next game I’m gonna pop him so hard. After y’all watch film what he did to Jalen Brunson. You better make sure you put that knife in his neck…next game.”

After the game, Brunson had a cold-blooded reaction when asked about Wembanyama shoving him early in the game.
“Whatever you saw is what you saw,” Brunson said.
Following the loss, Knicks head coach Mike Brown shifted his focus toward what he believed was an uneven whistle throughout the second half. Brown voiced frustration over the significant difference in free-throw attempts between the two teams.
“I never thought I’d be in the NBA Finals and see a team get 24 free throw attempts in the second half to another team’s 8,” Brown said. “I don’t think I complain much about officials. And maybe we were fouling, but they fouled too.”
The defeat officially snapped New York’s 13-game playoff winning streak, the second-longest postseason streak in NBA history. Brunson once again carried much of the offensive load, finishing with 32 points, five rebounds, and five assists in the losing effort.
Despite the disappointing result, Brown made sure to recognize Brunson’s impact and continued excellence throughout the season.
“He definitely has not or did not get the attention that he deserved during the regular season,” Brown said. “I think he’s a top-three MVP candidate and when it comes down to those things, his name wasn’t mentioned much.”
Brunson and OG Anunoby attempted to spark a late comeback in the fourth quarter, combining for 18 points while shooting 6-of-11 from the field and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. Their strong finish nearly erased San Antonio’s advantage, but it ultimately wasn’t enough to preserve New York’s historic playoff streak, which ended in a narrow four-point defeat.
The Knicks will now turn their attention to Game 4 on Thursday, where they will attempt to move one step closer to capturing the NBA championship with a 3-1 series lead.
