During this past off-season, former New Jersey Devils goaltender Scott Wedgewood signed a two-year, $3 million contract with the Nashville Predators. This was after the 32-year-old netminder posted a 16-7-5 record, a .899 save percentage, and a 2.85 goals-against average in 32 games with the Dallas Stars in 2023-24.
Wedgewood noticeably struggled during the beginning of the season with the Predators. In five games with the Central Division squad, the Brampton, Ontario native had a 1-2-1 record, a .878 save percentage, and a 3.69 goals-against average. This is where his time with the Predators would end.
In late November, the Predators traded Wedgewood to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for goaltender Justus Annunen and a 2025 sixth-round pick. The Avalanche bringing in Wedgewood was understandable, as they needed a shakeup between the pipes.
Since then, the Avalanche's decision to bring in Wedgewood has benefitted both the player and the team immensely. Wedgewood has bounced back in a big way since joining Colorado, as he had a 13-4-1 record, a .917 save percentage, a 1.99 goals-against average, and two shutouts in 19 regular-season games with them following the trade. This included having a .905 save percentage or better in eight out of his final nine appearances this regular-season.
Sometimes, a change of scenery benefits a player, and this move to the Avalanche has certainly done that for Wedgewood. He has been fantastic for them as a backup and will now look to continue to thrive if he gets into the net at all during their playoff run from here.
Wedgewood was selected by the Devils with the 84th overall pick of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. In 23 games with the Metropolitan Division club over three seasons, he had a 5-11-5 record, a .908 save percentage, and a 2.77 goals-against average.
