Deebo Samuel is going home. No, the former Washington Commanders wide receiver isn't returning to Washington; instead, he's heading back to the San Francisco 49ers, where he spent the first six seasons of his career.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Samuel is returning to the 49ers on a one-year deal worth up to $7 million. San Francisco initially traded Samuel to the Commanders in March 2025 for a 2025 fifth-round pick. In his one season for the Commanders, Samuel played in 16 games and led Washington with 72 receptions for 727 yards and five touchdowns.
Despite the Commanders' need for another starting receiver, Samuel was never an option for a return. Washington is looking for more of an outside option opposite Terry McLaurin. Stefon Diggs remains the top option for the Commanders.
Samuel returns to San Francisco, where he'll give the 49ers depth with Ricky Pearsall and Christian Kirk battling injuries. San Francisco's wide receivers room will look much different when Samuel arrives, following the offseason additions of Mike Evans and Kirk. Samuel's return is also ironic in regard to Brandon Aiyuk. Aiyuk is on San Francisco's reserve/left squad list and has yet to apply for reinstatement or report to the 49ers in an effort to gain his release. The Commanders are Aiyuk's preferred destination.
In six seasons with the 49ers, Samuel caught 334 passes for 4,792 yards and 22 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,143 yards and 20 touchdowns.
